1. In vivo Negative Control Teeth
This
bar graph shows the frequency of DIAGNOdent readings on 48 "virgin" enamel sites
(Negative control teeth were defined as teeth without restorations or visible
anomalies of any type). DIAGNOdent readings on the negative controls measured
0 - 3 92% of the time. The highest reading recorded was 8 on 1 of the
48 teeth.
2. In vivo Study Teeth With Varying Degrees of Suspected Caries

This bar graph shows the frequency of DIAGNOdent readings on 88 suspected enamel caries sites. DIAGNOdent readings ranged from 1 to 74 with a mean of 19. Readings of 8,10,11,12,14,17, & 18 occurred most frequently in this study.
3. In vivo DIAGNOdent Readings & Depth of Preparation
Needed To Remove All Carious Material Indicated By Caries Detection Dye (Seek
Caries Detector by Ultradent)
SUMMARY OF CHART:
-a. DIAGNOdent readings of 2 - 7 were associated with preps 1 - 2mm deep 93%
of the time (1mm = 36%, 2mm = 43%).
-b. Readings of 8 - 19 were associated with preps 1 - 4mm deep 98% of the time
(1mm = 17%, 2mm = 39%, 3mm = 22%, 4mm = 5%).
-c. Readings 20 - 60 were associated with preps 1 - 4mm deep 94% of the time
(1mm = 16%, 2mm = 35%, 3mm = 23%, 4mm = 6% ).
-d. When stained pits and fissures were small and seemed insignificant clinically,
the DIAGNOdent readings showed lower readings. When clinicians confirmed by
their clinical exam that extensive caries was present, the DIAGNOdent readings
were elevated.
